College scraps temporary IDs

 · Pedro Diogo

The college’s temporary ID system has been reviewed and withdrawn just a month after being introduced. The system, which allowed students who had forgotten their ID cards to receive a temporary one, is said to have compromised the college’s security arrangements, according to RuTC’s Divisional Director of Estates & Facilities’ Management, Sue Lockett.

Sue Lockett said: “the key to keeping staff and students safe on the college site is by ensuring to the best of our ability, that everyone who is on site, has a legitimate reason for being there and can be immediately identified as such.  The ID system makes a major contribution towards this,” and added “I can't go into details of individual breaches of the temporary ID system but will say that abuses by some students  led to more than one situation where we could not guarantee that everyone on site had a legitimate reason for being there.”

Since Wednesday 24th November, students who forget their ID cards have been turned away from the college at the gates.

Sue also urged students to contribute to the success of the ID card policy “by wearing their ID cards at all times, to produce it when requested by any member of staff and not to allow others to use their ID cards under any circumstances.”

Students who lose their ID cards are being asked to telephone the college’s reception to order a replacement card at the cost of £2  for the first loss and £5 for subsequent losses, which will also trigger the automatic issue of a Letter of Concern (SSU1).
